Strobing 101

4:12 PM

Let me begin by saying that I am not an expert in strobing. In fact, I just started doing this two months ago after reading the article in Cosmopolitan. (Click HERE for the article).

I have always been interested in contouring. You see, I have a round face. Contouring would definitely help my face look thinner especially in pictures. Unfortunately, putting too much make up (especially the dark ones) does not complement my over-all appearance. They say I look too matapang. In fact, people would often say that I would look better without any make up on (Thank you very much! Hehe).

But of course, make-up is an essential part of every girl's life -- especially when you have special occasions. Yes, this has always been my dilemma.

Then I came across that article on strobing. I've read the article intently and watched several tutorials online. Since then, I've been doing this make-up technique. It makes my face look thinner without making me look too matapang. In all fairness, it is also very easy to do provided you have the right products.

So what is strobing?

Cosmo says that it is a fun way for highlighting. It focuses on those parts of your face where the light would naturally hit-- your cheekbones, browbones, cupid's bow, etc. By focusing on these areas, you give yourself a chiseled look with a natural glow.

What to use?

There is only one essential product for strobing: a decent highlighter.

I started with two highlighters (Pearl Powder Bricks) from In2it - Beam and Candy (Php 550 each, SM Department Store).

As you can see, Beam has pink undertones making it perfect for those that have lighter skin tones. It is basically perfect for highlighting as it gives its users the perfect glow. Candy, on the other hand, has yellow and bronze undertones which makes it perfect for those who have darker skin tones. However, it may also be used by fairer-skinned ladies to give them a more sculpted look. I highly recommend In2it for those with sensitive skin like mine as this product is made for girls with sensitive skin. I also recommend these highlighters to those who are on a tighter budget. While In2it highlighters are not among those listed as the best, they nevertheless give you the natural glow, making them perfect for strobing!

Unfortunately, In2it does not come with any applicator. However, you may use your Blush Brush or your fingers!

Aside from In2it, I am also using Benefit's High Beam (Php 1,400, Rustan's) and Watt's Up (Php 1,600, Rustan's).

High Beam is a satin pink liquid highlighter which has been dubbed as the makeup artists' secret for a supermodel glow. Watt's Up, on the other hand, is a champagne highlighter with a cream-to-powder finish. I was hesitant at first to try products from Benefit since they do not claim to be hypoallergenic. Nevertheless, I was surprised how perfect it was without causing my face to breakout. More importantly,  I love how my face glows whenever I use both. High Beam, however is more difficult to apply as compared to Watt's Up which has its own applicator. Still, I use my fingers to help both products blend perfectly with my skin. For those with higher budgets, these highlighters from Benefit are undeniably the best! In fact, you are more likely to see Watt's Up in the list of the best highlighters in the market. Nevertheless, In2it is still a good alternative for those who are not that keen in spending so much for cosmetics.
